In the past, we&#8217;ve examined&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/jthelander.com\/thelanderpcdigest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gender data for life science vs. tech CEOs<\/a>. This time, we&#8217;ll look at how CEO compensation was&nbsp;impacted by gender and&nbsp;total amount of financing.<br><br>Thelander has been tracking gender and ethnicity for executives for over five&nbsp;years, and we&#8217;ve used this exclusive data in our analysis.&nbsp;Let&#8217;s jump in!<strong>Chart 1<\/strong>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;CEO compensation by gender at&nbsp;companies with&nbsp;less than $15 million in total financing.&nbsp;Thelander data shows that male CEOs are&nbsp;<strong>compensated more in total cash&nbsp;<\/strong>(which can be a combination of base salary and bonus, or just base salary) and equity (both founder and non-founder)&nbsp;compared to their female counterparts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jthelander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/73e7764c-5c10-9e8c-3bd7-cb7f8fa8d8a9.png\" alt=\"CEO Compensation by Gender\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chart 2<\/strong>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;CEO compensation by gender for companies with $15 &#8211; $49.9 million in total financing.&nbsp;Thelander data shows:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The biggest\u00a0impact on\u00a0the mix of cash and equity comes from the total amount of financing (as discussed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/jthelander.com\/thelanderpcdigest-1152634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Female CEOs are making more in total cash compared to their male counterparts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The founder and non-founder equity is competitive for both male and female CEOs.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jthelander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/145003f9-fdca-7bed-dd54-2b4888dcbf7e.png\" alt=\"CEO Compensation by Gender\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chart 3&nbsp;<\/strong>looks at the next financing bracket ($50 &#8211; $89.9 Million). Thelander data shows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cash has increased and the equity has decreased (due to dilution), when compared to the first two financing brackets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Female CEOs are making\u00a0<em>more\u00a0<\/em>than their male counterparts in median total cash &#8211; but\u00a0<em>less<\/em>\u00a0when looking at the 75th %ile.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Male CEOs have more non-founder equity compared to female CEOs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The founder total equity is higher for female CEOs compared to male CEOs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-border\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jthelander.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/f40dada8-3125-aeca-e98f-beb1695296b8.png\" alt=\"CEO Compensation by Gender\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our findings:<\/strong><br>Overall, the playing field is more level in terms of male vs. female compensation than in past years.&nbsp;Compared to 2022, there was a slight uptick in the amount of female CEOs, but the compensation stayed relatively stable YoY.&nbsp;<strong>What&#8217;s worth noting is how many MORE male CEOs there are compared to female CEOs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is this data important?<\/strong><br>Having access to market data on base salaries, bonuses, total cash, and equity helps&nbsp;level&nbsp;the playing field.&nbsp;It allows us&nbsp;to see what the market is paying based on different filters, such as total amount of financing.
